During the summer the toads and frogs come out in full force, and you can often hear them croaking away in the evening. Both are amphibious, but frogs spend more time in the water than toads do, and have smooth skin. Frogs like to sit on the banks of the creek or in the shallows of the pond, and are quite invisible unless you're specifically looking for them. I often unintentionally startle a frog, and it leaps into the water with a squeak before I can lay eyes on it. This rather enormous specimen was trying to hide in water than was too shallow for its size, though, making it easy to photograph. Here's the same frog on land, deciding it was safe to come out again after I sat still for several minutes:
